Universal Binary

A Universal Binary is a compiled piece of software which contains compiled versions for both x86 and PPC Macs. These are also known as Fat Binaries.

Apple has published a set of Universal Binary Programming Guidelines for software developers, with the hopes of increasing compatibility during the transition to Intel.
