Troubleshooting Finder
From Applepedia
If the OS starts up, but the Finder never appears, you usually have a hard-to-troubleshoot issue.

Classic Mac OS: File sharing / Web sharing
- In the Classic Mac OS, sometimes file sharing can freeze startup looking for a network that doesn't exist. You can just Force quit file sharing when this happens, and startup will continue.
- Web sharing has the same issue, and the same solution.

Bad disk
- Sometimes, if you have a bad disk, the Finder will choke on it when trying to get its icon/size/etc. Try removing any disks or media that aren't your boot disk.

Corrupted User
- Try logging in as a different user, and seeing if it's something in your user profile. Maybe deleting the Finder's preference file is enough to fix it.

Corrupted Finder
- Maybe your Finder is simply corrupt, and you have to re-install the system.
