Terminal

The Terminal application (found in /Applications/Utilities) is a UNIX terminal emulator.

Mac OS X currently uses the popular bash shell. Versions prior to 10.3 (Panther) had tcsh enabled by default.

A popular alternative to Terminal is iTerm, which allows for multiple tabbed terminal sessions and a bit more configurability than Terminal currently offers. However, its configuration interface can be confusing at times, it may feel a bit slower on older machines, and using it in Tiger seems to introduce a host of minor bugs--so Terminal still deserves due consideration.
