Guide
Just for mroach, I'm adding this guide to the neat app that is SSHTM.
Prerequisites
- Have a host to SSH into.
- Have downloaded and installed the beta version from the site to the right.
- Fear not THE MAN, and be able to answer any questions he may present you with.
Step 1
Upon launch, you will be presented with a small window that looks like this:
Click the Configuration button
Step 2
You will be presented with this:
Give your new tunnel a name, and add your login and the host/port you will be connecting to. Don't worry about local and remote port redirections for the time being. Click the Options button in the lower right to reveal the drawer.
Step 3
Check the boxes as indicated above. The "Compress" option is just that, optional.
Step 4
Close out of all dialogs and get back to the main screen. Hit the "play" button by your shiny new connection. The first time you connect to a host, you will be presented with this:
Click yes, it will prompt you for your password.
Step 5
If you see this, your connection is established. Now, to configure your browser to use your new tunnel.
Step 6
Go into your browser (or IM client, IRC client, anything that can tunnel over a SOCKS4 proxy) and set your SOCKS host to be localhost on port 1080. For example:
Step 7
Browse without your company or school's firewall. You can check if you're truly tunneling your traffic by going to a site such as What Is My IP? with tunnel turned off, and then turned on. That's pretty much it. When you're done with your porn sites, turn off the tunnel, change your proxy settings back to whatever they were before, and bask in the knowledge that those restrictions placed on you are there for a reason. :)
Important Notes
- Since SOCKS4 doesn't forward DNS requests, THE MAN won't know how you're browsing, but will know where you're browsing.
- THE MAN can tell if you have an open SSH tunnel.
