"Portable Network Graphics". An open, free alternative to GIF (although the patents on GIF have expired now), it achieves better, lossless compression, full color, and has an alpha channel rather than simply 1-bit transparency.

There is a PNG gamma bug in Safari that causes PNGs to not match the same colors in HTML or CSS. This has supposedly been fixed in Safari 2 for Tiger.
