Mac OS X 10.3 "Panther" was the forth major release of the Mac OS X operating system. It was first announced by Apple Computer CEO Steve Jobs at Apple's World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 23, 2003. It was later released on October 24, 2003. Apple claimed that Panther had 150 new features (some are listed below). Panther was one of the most successful releases in Apple's history and as of June 6, 2005, Panther represented 49% of all Mac OS X users.

Features

Exposé

The largest new feature in Panther was Exposé, which lets you press a button to reveal all the open windows side-by-side.

Fast User Switching

Fast User Switching is the act of logging in as another user without having to log out the currently logged in user.

FileVault

FileVault is support for an encrypted home folder, meaning that if your computer is stolen, nobody can read its contents without the password.

Secure Delete

Along with FileVault, Panther added support for Securely deleting files in the Finder, by overwriting them with blank data to make sure they can't be recovered. Disk Utility also added support for wiping the free space on a disk, and wiping whole disks with multiple passes.

Fax

Built-in support for sending and receiving Faxes was added.

Updated apps

Updated Finder

The Finder got a new, brushed metal interface. It also got the "search" toolbar item, and a customizable sidebar. Also added was support for color labels for files (like in the Classic Mac OS).

Preview

PDF support in Preview was much-improved, adding better searching tools and speeding up the rendering.

TextEdit

MS Word file format support was added to TextEdit.

iChat AV

iChat became iChat AV, with support for audio- and video- chat.

Bundled apps

X11

X11 which was previously a separate download from apple.com was now bundled with the OS.
