KisMAC is a passive wireless network detection utility.
Unlike other programs such as AirStumbler, iStumbler or MacStumbler, KisMAC is a passive scanning utility. Rather than sending out probe requests (and requiring a response), it puts the wireless card into monitor mode and intercepts communications not just from access points but clients as well. So in addition to not revealing your presence, it can pick up networks with hidden SSIDs and monitor AP traffic.
It supports the use of orinoco/hermes chipset/prism2/airport/airport extreme... etc
With the release of KisMac R75, Mac OS X users who have AirPort Extreme cards will now be able to use their cards in passive mode. This is really good news for those who have been waiting to use their APx for passive scanning. Apparantly the people behind the KisMAC software had to reverse-engineer the cards. There is also now a broad range of Network-Security features allowing those who operate or maintain wireless networks to test the security of their own network.
