The fourth iPod generation added the click wheel earlier introduced on the iPod Mini, allowing Apple to slim the iPod even more. This model also has greatly improved battery life, up to 12 hours. The 40gb model was dropped in February 2005.

When Apple discontinued its iPod Photo line on 28 June 2005, this generation was given a color screen and a 60gb model was added. This cost $399, down from the $449 the 60gb iPod photo had cost.
