The first update of the iPod came in July 2002. The only physical change was that they replaced the mechanical scroll wheel of the first generation with a touch-sensitive wheel using technology from laptop touchpads (made by Synaptics).
This was also the first generation to support Windows PCs. The PC version had to be ordered specially, and used MusicMatch Jukebox to syncronize, as iTunes hadn't been released for Windows.
A 20 GB model was also introduced, so you could now get a 5 GB, 10 GB or 20 GB model. (the 5 GB model was still |Gen 1 though, with the mechanical scroll wheel)
