The first iPod was announced on October 23 (it didn't ship until November though). Many Apple fans were skeptical (earlier rumor reports talked about something "revolutionary", but an MP3 player could hardly be considered revolutionary), but by the end of 2001, 125.000 iPods has been sold.
It featured a mechanical scroll wheel, and four mechanical buttons around the wheel.

10 GB model
On July 17 a 10 GB model, priced at $499, was added. Support for contact lists was also added.
