Emacs is the extensible, customizable, self-documenting real-time display editor.
The name ``Emacs was originally chosen as an abbreviation of Editor MACroS; though it is sometimes referred to as Eight Megs And Constantly Swapping.

General
Emacs is a very extensible (and sometimes confusing) editor and part of the GNU Project. GNU Emacs has since 2nd June (version 22.1) been compilable as a native Carbon application [1]; before that there are quite a few ports of GNU Emacs to Carbon/Cocoa, several of which are still ongoing projects.
