The Classic environment is Apple's way of letting you run software written for MacOS 9 and earlier inside OS X.

To be able to use the Classic environment, you need to have MacOS 9 installed.

The Classic environment is pretty good at backwards compatability - it even runs the black-and-white Tetris written in 1986.
