The Performa series was Apples attempt to make attractive hardware/software bundles for home users. In the beginning they took other Mac models (mainly LC series models), stuck on a ton of productivity apps and games, and sold them as Performas. Later though, they made a few original Performa models out of spare parts - the infamous Performa 5200 was the first one out.
