Steve Jobs had insisted the Mac have no internal upgrade capabilities - if the user buys an upgrade, he should be able to see it, was his reasoning. Once Steve Jobs was out of the company, there were free to release an expandable computer.

And so they did - the Mac II resembled the Apple II in that it had a ton of upgrade potential, 8 RAM slots, and 6 NuBus expansion slots. It didn't come with onboard video, instead this was supplied via a NuBus card, and could thusly be upgraded.
