The title given to this article is incorrect because of MediaWiki limitations. The correct title is iBook series.

The iBook was Apple's laptop equivalent of the iMac. Despite being their "budget laptop", the iBooks have never suffered from the low build quality of PC Laptops from Dell and Compaq.

FAQ

I've just installed some RAM, and it's not showing up!

Make sure you push it in all the way! Several people in the Megathread failed the first time they inserted the RAM they didn't push it in far enough. None of the gold on the connector should show. A tip is to start inserting it in a 30° angle and go from there.

Can I hook up an external monitor and run it at a different resolution than my iBook?

Apple's VGA Display Adapter plugs into the external display port on your eMac, iMac G5, iMac G4 flat-panel, 12-inch PowerBook, or iBook (only dual USB and up models?) which allows you to hook up a VGA monitor as a mirror image display. There is an Open Firmware "hack" of sorts that allows the external display to be used for spanning. With this hack you can also run higher resolutions on the external display, not just the native displays resolutions. You can set either the native or external display as the main window with the menu bar on top by modifying the settings in System Preferences.

This may void your AppleCare but I've sent my iBook in for various repairs (albeit non-display related) three times and it has not been an issue or even mentioned as it is only an open firmware value that has been changed.

Is there anything wrong with storing my iBook in sleep mode for long periods?

Sleep will drain the battery very slowly, but that's about it.

Tips and Tricks

  • All non-clamshell iBooks have the same power adapter, and they also have it in common with the PowerBooks. (possibly also clamshells, unverified)
  • For better battery life, try installing Apple's CHUD Tools and turning on the "Nap" setting.
