Know before you buy
Here's a list of some things folks may not know about the MacBook and may be surprised about after buying one. It's not meant to be a list of reasons not to buy one, it's just an FYI.
- The keyboard is not backlit
- No modem
- No ExpressCard slot
- Only had Mini-DVI out, meaning you'd have to buy a DVI or VGA adapter if you want to hook up an external display
- Will not support the 30" cinema display
- Has support for 802.11a
Trackpad mouse
The trackpad on the MacBook is new an improved. If you go into System Preferences > Mouse & Keyboard > Trackpad and check off all of the options, you can start using your trackpad the way it was meant to be used.
- Tap the trackpad with one finger to click
- Tap twice with two fingers to double blick
- To right click, tap your trackpad with two fingers
- To scroll, place two fingers on the trackpad and move them side to side or up and down
- To drag an item, double tap your trackpad, but don't lift your finger after the second tap and you can drag the item. Click again to release (unless you didn't turn on dragging lock)
Keyboard
The MacBook keyboard is pretty standard in its keymappings. The physical design is unique and was first met with skepticism, but is now widely regarded as a great design.
The main points of interest are keys modified by Fn. To get Home/End, Page Up/Page Down, you hold down Fn and use the arrow keys. To get forward delete, hold Fn and press the Delete/Backspace key.

Memory upgrade
Most people have the sense not to buy the 2GB upgrade on the MacBook from Apple. It's highway robbery. You're best off buying and installing the memory yourself.

Spotting the 13" MacBook
Compared to the iBook G4 (Mid 2005), the MacBook is thinner, shorter, with a width between the 12" and 14" iBooks. It has a MagSafe power connector on the left instead of an RCA-style connector on the right, no visible latch, iSight built in, and a radically redesigned keyboard.
Compared to the MacBook Pro and PowerBook G4 Series, the MacBook is whiter or blacker, and has very little visible metal.
The easiest way to tell the black MacBook apart from the PowerBook G3 Series (PDQ) is that the Apple logo on the back of the screen is upside-down when the computer is closed with the latch facing you. Additionally it is also lighter, smaller, and somewhat faster and more powerful.
